Support Services - Organ Donation
Here at
the Hospice we are committed to raising awareness about organ donation.
You may
not realise it but many people living with a progressive life threatening
illness still have the option of donating organs after their death.
Corneas (from the eyes) are particularly successful and can be grafted
to restore sight from doners up to the age of 100 years.
Evidence
suggests that 92% of families would give consent if they knew the
patient's wishes. So, if you do carry a card, or are considering
donating your organs, all we ask is that you make your wishes known
to your family or next of kin. This will make it easier for
them to come to a decision - their written consent is required should
the situation arise.
Alternatively,
you could speak with a member of the Hospice team caring for you.
They would record your expressed wishes in your care records.
This information could then be shared with your family or next of
kin upon your death.
We would
like to reassure you that your family or next of kin will not be
pressured in any way and that the utmost care and consideration
will be given to them in such an event.
Thank
you for reading this. If you or your family require more information
or wish to discuss the matter further, please do not hesitate to
ask a member of staff.
