Breathlessness Clinic

The Breathlessness Clinic at the Hospice was set up in 2002 and is run by a Clinical Nurse Specialist - Carol Ellis.  We aim to assist those people experiencing breathlessness and to help them to be more in control of their breathing.

Support is provided for both in-patients and outpatients.  Outpatients will normally be seen in Shornells, but home visits can be arranged if necessary.

What to expect from the clinic.  The help and care includes:

          •  A breathing assessment
          •  Advice on how to improve breathlessness using breathing exercises and relaxation techniques
          •  Advice on coping with daily activities
          •  Emotional support
          •  Ongoing advice by telephone after your last appointment

If possible, we recommend that you are accompanied by your partner or a carer. This will help them understand the advice given and the techniques used.

Referrals to the Breathlessness Clinic can be via your GP, Hospital Consultant or Clinical Nurse Specialist.  Referrals need to be made on the Specialist Palliative Care Referral Form .  Click here to download a copy.

These forms can also be obtained from the Clinical Services Manager, Clare Preston, by calling 020 8320 5820, fax 020 8312 2106 or E-mail.  Click here.
