Lymphoedema Service

The Lymphoedema Clinic is run by one full time (Macmillan) Lymphoedema Specialist Lead Nurse and a part-time Lymphoedema Support Nurse.

The clinic operates five days a week and provides treatment to patients in Woodlands the Hospice In-patient Unit, Shornells and out-patient clinic as well as within the community.  There are two satellite clinics at local Hospitals and an established service at Darent Valley Hospital.

The service we provide

We provide advice, support and information to patients and their family who have developed, or who are at risk of developing Lymphoedema.  Patients with either primary or secondary Lymphoedema can also access our service.

Primary Lymphoedema is as a result of damage to the lymphatic system from birth. or development during adolescence or in mid-life as a result of abnormal functioning of the lymphatic system.

Secondary Lymphoedema is as a result of treatment for cancer (eg radiotherapy, surgery) or as a result of accidental trauma or injury, venous insufficiency and reduced mobility.

Treatment specialities include:

  • Skin care
  • Exercise/limb positioning
  • Daily simple lymphatic drainage (self massage)
  • Compression hosiery.

Decongestive Lymphatic therapy comprises:

  • Skin care
  • Medical Lymphatic drainage
  • Multi-layer Lymphoedema bandaging.

How we receive our referrals

We receive referrals via all Health Care professionals across Greenwich and Bexley boroughs for patients with primary and secondary Lymphoedema.

For patients who do not live in the London Boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley, funding will be sought from the appropriate Primary Care Trust before we can see a patient.

Lymphoedema referrals need to be made on the Specialist Palliative Care Referral Form.  Click here to download a copy.

These forms can also be obtained from the Clinical Services Manager, Clare Preston, by calling 020 8320 5820, fax 020 8312 2106 or E-mail.  Click here.
